Having just spent a bit over $900 on my van at the beginning of the summer (and deferring until October another $400-500 worth of additional work that will have to be done before it can pass an inspection in November), I know exactly what you're feeling about now. My criteria has been and continues to be, "What will it cost me on a yearly basis to replace this vehicle, and will I be trading one set of problems for another?"
Since the new vehicle I'd like to have would cost me at least $20K in price and taxes, and any used vehicle I bought would be likely to have similar problems to my existing one (mostly related to becoming an older car - gee, just like people....), it's still cheaper to have this one worked on for now. Add in the added insurance costs (not only newer car, but newer car with teenager in household - gack!), and a new-to-me car isn't worth it at this point.
As long as the body and interior hold out, I'll stick with what I have.
